Diet: Everything Works

Yep, pretty much everything will work.

Maybe not the cabbage soup diet, or the HCG diet, but most everything will work.

Paleo works.

If It Fits Your Macros works.

Low Carb works.

Intermittent Fasting works.

Three square meals per day works.

Six small meals per day works.

There’s no need to be dogmatic about what diet to follow.

Test out different methods, and find what works best for your lifestyle as well as what is sustainable for you long term.

For me, intermittent fasting works best most of the time. I wake up early for work and don’t want to take time to worry about breakfast. So I skip it and then plan accordingly the rest of the day. I feel pretty darn good and I’ve found a version of it for me that works well.

Intermittent fasting may not work for you. Maybe if you skip breakfast you find yourself scouring your shelves for snacks or eating an entire bag of chips at night. If you overeat at night, you probably want to make sure you consume something for breakfast.

I recently started working with an online client, and this was the case with her. She’s a single mom who works full time and has 2 young children. It’s very challenging for her to get something in her stomach in the morning.

She’s not going to make an omelet or blend a smoothie in the morning. She can just shake up her protein powder with water and throw her blueberries in a ziploc. Get out the door. Maybe that would work best for you.

Talk to a nutritionist or dietitian 10 years ago and they probably would have told you to consume 6 small meals per day. The idea being – you keep your metabolism stoked all day and increase the thermic effect of feeding (calories burned digesting food). Sure, this works for people who keep their overall calories in check.

The problem with this way of eating is – it doesn’t work for everyone. For busier folks, they can’t or don’t want to take the time to bring snacks to work. For others, they end up eating when they’re not hungry. If you’re trying to lose weight or body fat, how much sense does it make to force feed yourself when you’re not hungry? So…three square meals might work better for these people.

If you’re trying to lose weight or body fat, test out different methods and find out what works best for you. Once you find something that fits your lifestyle, you can even make small tweaks to make it work better for you.

Remember: What diet you follow matters less than the following something.
